FirstClass Messages - Reading and Sending
1. Reading Messages

When you have new unread or unlistened to messages, a red flag will appear on the Mailbox icon on your FirstClass Desktop.
New messages appear in your mailbox with red flags next to them.

To read or listen to a message:

1. Double-click your Mailbox to open it.
2. Locate the new message.
3. Double-click the message.The message will open in a new window.
   If the message is a voice message, it will begin to play immediately. For more information on voice messages, see the Voice Message section of this guide.
4. The red flag will disappear after you have read or listened to a message.
2. Creating a New Message

To compose a new message:

1. Click the New button in the Mailbox toolbar.
2. A new message window will appear.
3. Always type a subject for your message inthe subject line.

3. Addressing Messages
Addressing a Message to a Glenbard Staff Member or Student

1. In the To: field of the New Message window, type the name of the employee or student. (Students appear in the directory as firstname_lastname_ID#. Ex: Joe_South_60137). You do NOT need to enter the entire e-mail address.

2. You may also type in the first few letters of the first name, a space, and the first few letters of the last name. A list of possible matches will       appear, and you can double-click the correct match.

3. Press Return.

4. The name will appear in the To: field with a small green person icon next to it.

Addressing a Message to Non-Glenbard Contacts:

When e-mailing anyone who does not have a Glenbard FirstClass account, you must type in a valid e-mail address.
A valid address includes the @ symbol and a domain. (Example: [email protected], or [email protected]).

1. In the To: field of the New Message window, type in the valid e-mail address of the person you wish to contact.

2. Press Return.

3. The e-mail address will appear in the To: field with a small purple person icon next to it.

4. Addressing Messages to a Conference
Messages intended for large groups of people, such as your building's staff, student body, or the entire district should be sent to the appropriate FirstClass conference. Please remember that conferences should be used for school-related messages only; please do not post personal messages in the conference areas. For more information on Conferences, see the Conference sections of this guide.

1. Open the Conference where you wish to send the message.

2. Click the New button on the toolbar in the Conference window:

3. You will see the Conference name appear in the To: field of the new message, with a Conference icon next to it.
Remember that your message can be viewed by anyone with access to that conference.
5. Addressing Messages to Multiple Recipients
You may wish to send your message to multiple people at once. This is called carbon copying a message. You may carbon copy your message to multiple recipients, both within and outside of the FirstClass system.

1. In the To: field of the New Message window, address your message to your primary recipient, as you would any normal message.
2. Press the Return key and an addtional recipient line will be created. You will see a blinking cursor.
3. Add the next recipient by typing the FirstClass name or e-mail address and continue to press Return until you are finished adding recipients.
6. Blind Carbon Copying Messages
Sometimes, you may wish to send your message as a Bcc: (blind carbon copy). A blind carbon copy is sent to a recipient without other recipients' addresses appearing. This is useful if you want to copy a message to many people without each of them seeing who the other recipients are.

1. In the To: field, address your message to your primary recipient (as described above).
2. Click the Show Bcc button in the New Message toolbar or press Command-B (Mac) or Control-B (PC) to display the Bcc field.

3. Enter names and/or e-mail addresses in the Bcc field.

7. Composing and Formatting Messages
Compose your message in the message body area of the window. Use the tool buttons in the message toolbar to format your message.

The tool buttons are:

Normal, Bold, Italics, Underline
Quote (highlights text)
Increase/Decrease Indent
Format Selection/Format Paragraph
Make Link
(You do not need to use this if you enter an entire URL. Full URLs will automatically become links.)
Insert Signature
(See the Preferences section of this guide for steps on creating a signature.)
Spell Check
Format font, text size, and text color
Left, Center, Right alignment
Insert: (Signature, Image, Table, Page Break, Horizontal Line, Link, Marker, Background)

Format: (Selection, Paragraphs, Margins, Background, Cells, Table)
8. Sending Messages
Once you have addressed, composed, and formatted your message, you're ready to send it.

1. Messages that have not yet been sent will appear in your mailbox with a white flag next to them.

2. Click the Send button to send your message.

  Once your message has been sent, the white flag will disappear next to your message in your mailbox.
9. Sending Messages with Priority, Sensitivity, and Receipt
Sending messages with Urgent Priority:

1. To send a message with Urgent Priority, click the Urgent button in the new message window.

2. In the recipient's mailbox, the subject will appear in bold with the word Urgent before it.


Sending messages with Sensitivity:

1. To send a message with sensitivity, click on the Message menu, choose Sensitivity, and choose a Sensitivity status.

2. After you send your message, it will appear in the recipient's mailbox with the sensitivity in bold.

Sending messages with Receipt (Registered Mail)

Sending a message with Receipt on Read (Registered) will send you an automated message when the recipient reads your message. This only works for Glenbard FirstClass recipients.

1. To receive a message when your recipient reads your e-mail, choose Message > Receipt > Receipt on Read.

2. Your message will appear in your recipient's mailbox with Registered in bold.


3. When the recipient reads the message, you will receive an automated e-mail from "Receipt Office" indicating the date and time the message was read.
10. Unsending Messages
Messages sent to Glenbard FirstClass recipients/conferences can be unsent if you make an error.

1. Open the message you want to unsend, or select it in your mailbox.
2. Click the Unsend button in the toolbar.


3. Your message will be removed from the recipient's mailbox, and appear with a white flag as an unsent message in your mailbox.
11. Checking Message History
You can check the History of messages in FirstClass. The History includes when the message was sent, who has read it and when, and whether the message was forwarded, unsent, or copied. History will only display this information for recipients with Glenbard FirstClass accounts.

To check a message's history:

1. Highlight or open the message.
2. Click the History button.
3. The message history will display in a new window.
